Auroral behaviors and tail processes during substorms

Previous studies of auroral behaviors have suggested that a substorm expansion is a result of a chain of processes originated in the magnetotail. In particular, the stepwise feature of auroral evolution at substorm expansion suggests a systematic chain of processes in the central plasma sheet. However the relationship between aurora and the tail signature have not been confirmed observationally. By presenting a recent study on global images of aurora and the conjugate magnetotail data, we discuss necessary future improvement for multi-point analysis technique to understand substorm mechanism and the magnetotail physics.
